The sculpted works at Holy Mountain are limited in number in
comparison to the other art forms. Nevertheless, the marble ruins of
mainly architectural nature such as columns, capitals, bases, turrets,
chalices and icon screens are of impressive quality. These pieces,
which are more evident in the older monasteries, date from the 10th
and 11th century while many others date from the Paleochristian
period. Examples of sculpture include marble icon screens (Protato),
and sculptures (Vatopedi), and later chalices, turrets (Iveron/
Docheiariou/ Xiropotamou), grave monuments and pseudosarcophagi
(Vatopedi), marble holy water basins.
